This balcony Strutt is from Gujarat in India. Used at haveli’s (courtyard houses) or temples. Gujarat is known for its array of profusely carved columns, struts (angled supports), arches, doors, windows, and balconies. The wood used to construct these houses & temples was imported into the region by sea as Gujarat is not a highly-wooded area. Most of the heavily-carved buildings in the region are half-timbered; a hybrid of wooden frames and brick walls. The overhanging first floor or the upper veranda of the buildings are held up by pillars and large elaborately carved struts like this one.
