Description

A Morung is the center of each family clan. It is typically a huge building which physically dominates a Naga village, resplendent with carving representing hornbills, tigers, mithan (buffalo) and human heads. The Morung fulfils various functions. It is a sleeping place for the young unmarried men and in former raiding days it served as a guard-house for the warriors. Young people learn about social practices and beliefs from their elders and initiation ceremonies, festivals and other rituals are being held. In every Morung there is a huge wooden drum (log-gong) carved out of a single tree trunk. In days of head-taking, a captured head would be brought to the Morung of its log-gong, where the necessary rituals would then be performed. This panel is carved from a heavy wood (red mahogany) in deep relief. Depicting skulls to show they are head hunters, fierce warriors with shields, a tiger for the hunting, a Chinese gong as a money symbol and a male and female holding hands for sexuality.
